OMG! I still need to fact check this, but I'm praying it's true because I am dying to use this example the next time I talk about the ethics of using ellipses. It's perfect.I can still use it if it's fake, but it's so much better if it's true.(Do any of you happen to know what this book is?)

@grammargirl I can't get past the NYT paywall, but it appears to be real and the book is John Casey's 'Spartina.'

@grammargirl I forget which one, but a fairly famous Young Earth Creationist once quoted an evolutionary biology book to show that evolution was incorrect and used an ellipsis that spanned several pages.

@grammargirl I’d be proud to use that blurb without the ellipses 🎣 But if folks raised a stink the controversy might well drive sales

@grammargirl spent more time than I care to admit trying to figure out an ethical problem with an ellipse. Puts circles out of work? Sending my data from two foci to Zuckerberg? I am all better now.

@grammargirl In that article, you should also talk about the ethics of changing punctuation (like a period to an exclamation mark), like a lot of movie studios do. That leads a review that says something like, "Only in a world where no other movies exist could this ever be considered great." to eventually appear in the movie trailer as "...Great! --Aint It Cool News".

@grammargirl The good thing is, at least if the text around the ellipses is specific enough, Google can help you out usually.
