@kfogel @msw I need to issue a mea culpa. I went back and read the "base" BSL 1.1 license (without any "Additional Use Grant"). WOOOHWEEEE that certainly doesn't smell like Open Source to me. Actually smells a lot like shit to me - no production use WTFSo I will not use the phrase "BSL open source" ever. For me, the hashicorp additional use grants bring it into the realm of "open source" for my sniff test. 1/x

@TheSteve0 Thanks for going back and checking. Hashicorp's particular configuration of BSL does help some, I agree -- any given release of the software is guaranteed to eventually transition to being really open source, at least.

@kfogel @msw I do think there is a disconnect between what the "one true definition" call Open Source and it's general understanding in large parts of the technology community. I also want to point out that Mastodon, given it's origin and who it attracts, is a pretty strong echo chamber on this issue. I still think the dilemma of:Hyperscaler abuse vs Healthy Open Source ecosystemis real and unresolved.2/x

@kfogel @msw There are two competing higher goods for me in this case.I am generally opposed to proprietary softwareI am generally opposed to immense consolidations of power. I know AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud compete fiercely. But given the lockin issues I raised yesterday, I see them as a single entity against new people trying to grow a business on their open source project. Anyway, still more to work out. Again, thanks for good convo yesterday3/3
