I have noticed that I am doing a weird thing (for me) in ChatGPT: I type my sentences in all lowercase and usually without punctuation. I'm mirroring how I type a Google search instead of how I type regular sentences, even though I'm using plain-language sentences as prompts. Have any of you noticed you are doing this too?#ChatGPT

@grammargirl This is also how I talk to people in Slack and texts. More a feature of conversational chat styles in 2023 than echoes of Google search for me.

@grammargirl I do the same! I feel like I also lose my usual “please” unlike with most chatbots.

@vees @grammargirl I have to disagree personally. On ChatGPT and in chat I tend to use more 'speech' than when I'm researching.I'm not the best at searching... full disclosure.

@grammargirl I'm the opposite. I use full sentences, and I feel bad if I don't thank it when it does a good job. I often ask for technical help (I work as a coder/sys admin), so I tend to write as though I were posting on Stackoverflow or some other website where I'm seeking help.

@grammargirl Not this, but I find myself being…polite? Asking things in a way that invites an answer, unlike how I search for things.

@grammargirl I try to rigorously police myself when writing prompts. I assume that, even if I have "opted out" of my prompts being used for further training, that it is best to feed it proper English grammar and spelling, and to say things like "please" and "thank you", so that resulting models may incorporate those norms.

@grammargirl Yep, I’m the same way. Punctuation sometimes goes away too.

@MichaelPorter I had no idea what you were talking about, so I ... asked ChatGPT. Did it get it right?(I used proper capitalization and punctuation since I knew I'd be posting it. 😀 )

@grammargirl That’s the one! I remember learning about Archy and Mehitabel when we studied poetry in English. Another little crumb of memory still rattling around in my brain 😊

@grammargirl me too. It's just about speed. I used to make full sentences, and say please and thank you, but the answers are of the same quality without all that so I stopped bothering! (I mainly use ChatGPT as a thesaurus, so lots of short queries.)

@grammargirl not only do I use correct punctuation, but I also say "thank you for your understanding", "could you please help me with this?", "I understand what you mean but...", which I think is equally cringy
