i'm finding myself in the weird situation of being someone who's trying to control his drinking, and now i'm kind of worried for someone else who drinks a lot.

@thor Why is that weird? You have first hand experience in excessive drinking and know the path it can take.

@mayonesa @encarsia this person's much younger so their body can take more. and i know it's not super uncommon to be drinking a bit heavily when you're younger. but the drinking seems to be out of sadness and loneliness, and this is what concerns me, because that reminds me of myself.

@thor @encarsia Yep. There's happy drunk and miserable drunk.I guess for me, most of the time, it simply requires too much effort to drink...

@mayonesa @encarsia i guess the weird part is that i'm not quite finished getting it under control myself. it's better than it was, but i'm not exactly the right person to set an example.

@thor @encarsia Maybe not, but you are showing him the realness of the struggle.

@thor That sounds indeed alarming.Still you can't force-stop anyone from taking a destructive path in life. That person has to come to this realization on their own.All you can do is signal help and support and express your concerns.@mayonesa

@mayonesa @encarsia but in a way we're very similar. both are neurodiverse and can be a bit impulsive

@thor @encarsia I wonder if humans are all as neurotypical as science likes to think we are.

@mayonesa The realization that there are things to deal with that are what they are and it's not on you or in your power to change them is quite essential.@thor

@encarsia @thor Fatalism, or just pragmatism? We can only change so much.

@mayonesa In a venn diagram there would be some overlap, together with a realism and a determinism circle.Pragmatism sounds too positive for me. 😅 @thor

@encarsia @thor There is no point pretending humanity is not doomed, but there is also no point pretending that it is not in our power to change.

@encarsia @thor As a total nihilist, I am acquainted with the darkness. But what interests me is that we can do better by simply ceasing to do stupid stuff and starting to do more smart stuff.I think it begins with honest discussion about how things have turned out, not "feelings" and "theory," and certainly not a short-sighted view of business that sees that status quo as permanent.

@thor ask your friend if they puke a lot or puke the next morning. If so, trouble ahead. All the long time hard partiers who have been partying into their 50s, I asked them and puking was foreign to them, especially the next morning.Meanwhile the pukers all ended up with health issues, me included.2nd note, I do not feel any better after being sober (mostly) for 4 years now. Damage was done.
