@ParadeGrotesque well, I came to America, had a chat with fellow expats, thought we could "split" the atom, build a bomb, thought shit! Thats not good, wrung hands & wished I hadn't. The end. Oh, bombed two Japanese cities to dust, killing over 200,000 instantly. More hand wringing. The end Of the world as we knew it.

Oppenheimer - my goodness, what a movie. This one has everything: betrayal, ambition, destruction, physicians name dropping, starting with Einstein and Bohrs. It's intense. The cast is amazing, the music is great. Almost 3 hours go past pretty fast. Definitely recommended.Another movie about the same events is "Fat man and Little boy", one of Paul Newman last movies.

OK, now the things I did not like in #oppenheimer :- So white. Here is a 3 hour movie without a single PoC I can remember. No African American, no Asian American, no Native American.I mean, I am sure there is at least one, in the background somewhere, but I cannot remember a single one, except for a single man at the Chicago University lab led by Fermi. This is a white man story, told by other white men.Even though most of the ;ovie is in Los Alamos, Native Americans are invisible.

- We dropped the bomb! OK, but both Hiroshima and Nagasaki are conveniently sweeped under the carpet. All we see are 2 bombs leaving Los Alamos on trucks. And #Oppenheimer looking wistfully at terrible images from the bombings... Terrible images we do not see at all.A couple of allusions to the effect of the A bomb are shown in dream like sequences of people slowly having the skin peeled off their faces, a bit like a Marvel Thanos snap.I can understand Japanese people being upset at that.

@ParadeGrotesque Indeed and the effects of all the tests in the desert on the local population are rather glossed over.

The movie REALLY glosses over the horrors of both, as it does over most of the horrors of WWII. It is true this is about Oppenheimer first, and the scientists sheltered at Los Alamos second, but a bit of historical context is, for me, a given on any movie of that period. These people did not exist in a vacuum, they were motivated, as Oppenheimer himself mentions in the movie, by the antisemitism of the nazis and the atrocities they committed.

@bill Absolutely - what the movie succeeds in doing is portraying Oppenheimer as a very conflicted man, but these conflicts are never really explained or detailed. And, to your point: the human cost is never detailed, neither in Japan, nor in what was at the time the Belgian Congo, nor among the Native American populations. We have a couple of symbolic images and sound effects, but no idea what both bombings really meant.

@ParadeGrotesque Now here's a coincidence which I don't think is out of place mentioning here. I just spent an hour in the bath tub reading James Baldwin's "Jimmy's Blues" and one of the poems is "Staggerlee wonders" where he actually says that America never asked black people about its wars and foreign policy. One line is in fact that nobody discussed the bomb with black people. So, presumably there weren't that many POC involved in the project.

@braveamateur You'd be surprised:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American_scientists_and_technicians_on_the_Manhattan_ProjectNow, it is quite true that, due to the extreme secrecy surrounding the whole thing, may contributors ignored what they were working on at least until Hiroshima. And Baldwin remarks are correct, of course.
