I'm getting really tired of both-siderism, especially when it comes to the issues of energy & climate change. I hear it in conversation; I see it in social media comments. Although weaning us off fossil fuels is not happening fast enough--for the planet, or for progressives--the progress on the clean energy front is substantial. Credit for progress at the federal level is entirely due to the Democrats, in the face of universal opposition by Republicans. #ClimateCrisis #politics #CleanEnergy

Witness: The extent to which Republicans are owned by the fossil fuel industry, versus Democrats. While some Democrats take fossil money (shame on them; more on that later in thread), there is a quantitatively HUGE difference in fossil fuel funding of R's versus D's. For the past decade, R's garner about 85% of oil and gas political contributions (bribes), versus 15% for D's. (https://www.opensecrets.org/industries./totals.php?cycle=2022&ind=E01) And yes, Joe Manchin is one of the most "bought" members of Congress, but look at all R's

Witness: The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. House vote: All 220 Democrats voted yes. 207 Republicans voted no. 4 Republicans did not vote. Senate: 48 Ds and 2 Indies voted yes; all 50 Rs voted no; VP Harris broke the tie; Biden signed it with ZERO Republican support. Although imperfect, it's the largest investment in #CleanEnergy in US history. Is it sufficient? No. We need the Green New Deal. But with Rs re-gaining control of the House in the midterms, there's zero chance right now.

So R's get ~85% of the Oily Boys' money, vs. 15% for D's. Another useful metric is how many legislators have foresworn fossil fuel money altogether. nofossilfuelmoney.org has encouraged legislators to pledge to accept zero funds from fossil fuel interests. Here's a list of Senators and Congresspersons who have taken that pledge. Party affiliation is hidden here, but astute observers will notice a pattern. https://nofossilfuelmoney.org/congressional-signers/ #ClimateCrisis #NoFossilFuels #uspol #CleanEnergy #uspolitics

OK, so we've seen Democrats deliver on clean energy against 100% Republican opposition. What is the Republican plan should they win back both houses & the presidency? A Republican 2024 Climate Strategy: More Drilling, Less Clean EnergyProject 2025, a conservative “battle plan” for the next Republican president, would stop attempts to cut the pollution that is heating the planet and encourage more emissions. (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/04/climate/republicans-climate-project2025.html) How is it that "both sides are just as bad?" #politics

But wait, the good folks at nofossilfuelmoney.org go beyond the US Senate and House. They have data from candidates for local, state, national (Senate and House), and Presidential candidates who have pledged "No Fossil Fuel" funding. I downloaded their .csv file, and whipped up a pie chart. At the local, state, and national level, 85% of politicans who have pledged not to accept fossil funding are Democrats. 0.9% are Republicans. Tell me "both parties are the same." #uspol #OilyBoys

I blocked someone today because basically their dialog consisted of insulting politicians who they didn't like. I routinely use the term "Oily Boys" to describe Republican politicans, & it may be kind of an insulting term, to me it's entirely appropriate. The R's are bought and paid for by the fossil fuel industry. They don't hide it. They show utter disdain for clean, renewable energy. They are #OilyBoys (and women). #uspolitics #uspol #CleanEnergy

Did I invent the term "Oily Boys?" No, I'm not that clever. I stole it from a song by that title by Greg Brown, a musician and national treasure from Iowa. You should listen to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdLtbGCH1-cI use the term frequently because it's succinct and accurate. #OilyBoys #FolkMusic #uspol #uspolitics
