@Jim my analysis as an old school CRPG and tabletop RPG player, and also of some friends who also also ate old school players, BG 3 is overhyped. Way overhyped.And we think that part of it is all the gay and ugly stuff they shoved in the game (the sexuality doesn't appeal to "the male gaze", therefore it's good in journos, faggots and shitlibs opinion), but also, and I think that's even more important, due to the fact that it seems zoomers have never played a single CRPG in their life, so they are completely mind blown that you have different dialogue options and those actually change something in the game.

@Suzu Someone else just said something similar that so many younger gamers haven't played a CRPG so it's mind fucking them. I could see that being the case. The dialogue options they are used to are three responses on a wheel all of which lead to either one or two outcomes so it must be a completely new world in that regard.

@Bead @Jim I get why they wanted to incorporate die rolls for every little action to be faithful to classic D&D, but there's a reason older Forgotten Realms games had you "roll a natural 20" for everything outside of combat. It's just frustrating when you know you have the skills and ability scores to open up a new opportunity through dialogue, but it doesn't happen because you happened to roll a 1. All it does is make me want to load the game and keep trying until I succeed, which is something you obviously can't do in tabletop D&D, so what's the point other than to waste your time?Also the combat is like XCOM except gayer and more infuriating.

Minsc, Sarevok, etc.Meanwhile, I was watching a friend playing BG 3, and you have the faggot vampire elf rogue dark as my soul (which I'm 100% sure it's the "OC, don't steal" of some dev), the effeminate wizard who is a junkie, and a few strong women who need no man and are interchangeable with each other. And what they all have in common is that they are very easy to stop caring about as soon as they aren't in your field of vision.

@Jim pretty goodGameplay is like: "Okay, I can't kill this Paladin and his crew at this level but what if I get into the second storey, destroy the ladders so they can't get up to me, place down an explosive barrel to start the combat with a bang..." Lots of that sort of stuff. One time a cutscene played and a baddie was clearly about to do a bad thing so I used the start combat button before he could do that in the cutscene. My other CRPG experience consists of DOS:2, Arcanum and Wrath of the Righteous. Among those, BG3 is the king so far. But I am only in Act 1 so who knows

From the way you can mix up stuff and do entirely broken things, to the actual racism that is interwoven into the game dialogue and doesn't look "forced" (the guy was a Dark Elf, and he was at a Dwarven town that doesn't like Dark Elves, and people were chasing him away from their houses, refusing to hire him, or trade with him, or even to speak with him, and they would tell in his face that he's a no good dark elf and it's lower than a vermin).That kind of shit would never fly nowadays.

@Jim The game itself is pretty decent. It's just Divinity: Original Sin 3 with D&D flavor. If you liked the D:OS games you will like BG 3.However the sexual content was written by a 12 year old who spends all day on reddit. You randomly walk in on a bugbear fucking an ogre. At the celebration after the first big quest everyone in your party and many outside it offer to fuck you, even ones who really didn't care for you much up to that point. The psycho space lizard lady will actively taunt you for not sleeping with her.It's really jarring because the story is going for a very grimdark D&D adventure feel but then you just have this completely random furry sex shit thrown in for no reason whatsoever.

Daggerfall is basically a fully 3D roguelike/dungeon crawler with actual world persistence. Given how popular the genre has become it would have printed money if it had been handled correctly. Not to mention the fact that Daggerfall almost had multiplayer but they ran out of time to finish implementing it. That would have been unbelievably cool back then.Julian LeFay might be one of my personal heroes as a programmer. That guy basically programmed the entirety of Daggerfall by himself. One of the most complex programming jobs in the world and one man did it before IDE's were usable. Actually insane.

@Ripsnort @Bead @Jim Inspiration and Lucky are your friends here, along with guidance and bardic inspiration.That should give you Advantage, +1d4, +1d6 (this one goes up to +1d10), and a few rerolls. Im playing on Normal and if I am prepped for a conversation its hard to fail anything so long as Im talking with my groups face. There are some ambush conversations that are hard to be ready for but I think thats the point.
