@Mummabear so, to answer from my personal perspective… it’s typically because the ones who say that are not going to a particular country but to several… when I went to Dublin I told people I was going to Ireland. If I was going to Germany, Spain, Norway, Denmark, and France (not in that order) I would say I’m going to Europe…

@Mummabear I think we kinda view the different countries like we do our states. "Europe" is kind of the abstract. I reckon most folks visit more than one country when they visit. Idk. I've never been there myself. Ironically, my daughter and her husband flew out to Germany today. Lol!

@Mummabear Usually we say we're going to a partikuler city or mountain or desssssert or so.What you are saying has to do with brevity...If we say we're going to "Calais" or so, many good folk will feel they've been foofooed while trying to remember where Calais is (for example), missing the entire paragraph of what our friend just saidi.e. we get tired of saying, "where are you going again?" If you're in a group you get silence and then later people stop by and say, "where are you going?"
