@NorcalGma2 as I was taking these photos, near (maybe in) the town of Orick, a local woman came up and talked about them and mentioned how destructive they were to gardens and property. Just as she was saying that one of the elk leaped over a wire fence like it was nothing and proceeded to start munching on the admittedly greener looking grass of someone’s back lawn.

@Trilobyter Yep.They can destroy a garden in no time. The elk don't range as far as my house, but we have lots of deer. Many years ago, I was charged by a bull elk that came crashing through the trees at Prairie Creek State Park. One of the people in my group started yelling and waving arms, and the elk hesitated and then turned away. It was an experience for sure. I hope you enjoy our area it is beautiful here.Sue Meg State Park is worth a visit.

@NorcalGma2 wow, yes I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of those antlers. We did go to Sue-meg & hike, gorgeous place as is everything around here, we are staying in a place near there on the coast north of Trinidad.

@Trilobyter Today will be a beautiful day.I am about 30 miles south of you very close to the coast.I love where I live. If you venture into Eureka, be careful.Ferndale isn't welcoming to everyone, sadly, so I don't recommend it anymore.

@NorcalGma2 what’s the issue with Eureka? I heard there are a lot of homeless around there but we didn’t notice anything that looked sketchy driving through town. And we did stay in Ferndale our first night, a pretty & quiet little town, how is it unwelcoming? I did note numerous pride flags around the town & even at one of the churches, so it certainly seemed welcoming in that respect. We come from southeast Texas and you sure don’t see pride flags on display in small towns there.

@Trilobyter The pride flags are the few people standing up against the many. There is a church there that is always putting hateful messages on their signage. I won't do business in Ferndale anymore, and I live right up the hill. I did attend a pride parade there in June and wish things were different. It is a small town much divided.I was raised in Eureka and worked in town until last year. I only say to be careful because cars are broken into regularly, and if you put something down, there is a good chance it might not be there if you go to pick it up.I am glad you are enjoying your visit to the beautiful California north coast.
