Mastodon is no longer the big elephant in the room like it was in 2017.

@collappsar There was actually a notable amount of users triggered by this and 2017 era Eugen said that it enabled harassment.The problem is, misskey.io (currently the fastest growing fedi instance or one of them) runs on software that doesn't have that limitation in place. I'm sure that's a major wake up call to Eugen to the point he relaxed his stance.

What I will say is that people understanding that public things may be indexed is a universal good for their health and safety. I like to call this problem "privacy through obscurity". Nobody on the fedi believes that anything they post can stay up forever, they are under the illusion that it gives them even more control over their online persona than Twitter does. Unfortunately that could not only not be further from the truth, but it's a dangerous mindset on the level of "I got my name out of the phonebook or listed it under an alias, I'm impossible to harass". To these people, this very instance and any running Pleroma/Misskey could be an archiver too.

So the story with Mastodon and search is that Eugen (circa 2017) did not add it because it was used on Twitter by people to fuck with each other. This is also when Eugen was solely pandering to bubble wrapped retards. This began to change with the infamous hashtag trends saga which led to the idea guys being really, really, pissed off.https://www.dailydot.com/debug/mastodon-fediverse-eugen-rochko/But the problem is, it gimped discoverability. Normal people online want to find other people into the same thing, and throwing the baby out with the bathwater wasn't the fix. Furthermore, the fastest growing fedi instance recently (using Misskey) has full text search and even someone on github said "yeah artists want this".

I really fail to see the anti-search argument given the fact that Google has quite likely already indexed your stuff here. So, you’re not really preventing anyone from doing a search on your posts. Any malicious actor can still find you. They just might go through the extra step of opening a new browser tab. I’m open to being wrong here but that’s how I currently understand it.
