I've been burning shit with a fresnel lens for like a week now, and I've been thinking on how well you could scale one up for maybe heating a metal plate or rock for cooking.

Yeah. Have like 4 sheets pointed at the corners of your hot plate to even heat distribution maybe. I've been having good fun practice fires and lighting my pipe with one of those credit card sized ones, so I really think it could work.

I think it would have to be fixed on a swivel mount or something, though. Unless it's like noon they're pretty finicky about sun positioning.Maybe put it on something like those bendy lamps?

@nugger Direct solar is bitchin'. You need a fat water tank to make it work properly, but I had maybe 2m^2 in Scotland, barely touched the gas all year, and it'd regularly blow off in summer if I didn't take a long enough shower.
