what helps people get comfortable on the command line? https://jvns.ca/blog/2023/08/08/what-helps-people-get-comfortable-on-the-command-line-/Would love more stories of things that helped you in the last ~5 years!(as usual, no need to reply if you don’t remember, or if you’ve been using the command line comfortably for 15 years — this question isn’t for you :) )

especially interested in what helped folks specifically get over the fear of accidentally deleting their files / doing something destructive on the command line. so far folks have mentioned:- get started on a raspberry pi / other “safe” environment- use a fancy prompt that tells you the current directory(again, only looking for replies from folks who got over this fear relatively recently)

(I've gotten really into posting "please don't reply if X Y Z" disclaimers on mastodon for my questions because otherwise I always get a lot of irrelevant replies like "I don't know but here's some speculation" or ”I started using the command line on my apple II” and it's just not helpful. Seems to be working so far!)

@b0rk I tried saferm and I still think that should be the default everywhere...... but I've more come to terms with the paranoia. Care is fundamentally necessary, being paranoid about it is *correct*. Most tools are well-behaved by default, but some are designed to let you shoot your foot if that's what you want.

@b0rk otherwise, my general tactic, and what I recommend to lots of people who want to learn computers: get a burner laptop for like $100. Learn how to wipe it and start over. Then go wild. If there's no valuable data on it, it doesn't really matter what you do with it.People need playgrounds. Their sole machine with their entire life's worth of data is not a playground.

I bed to differ. To "learn computers" is to find a job where you need those skills to advance.I dare you to come up with a better advice.I started learning UNIX at age 22, when a warehouse I was working as a fresh-off the boat immigrant for minimum wage. I saw tons of papers being printed on a dot-matrix every day, with a full-time clerk using a yellow highlighter going through page by page, marking all that needed to be handed to the pickers of bus parts.I first wrote a small C program to recognize patterns of the mainframe vomit. Then I switched to Visual Basic for DOS to make a GUI - then I installed Slackware, I learned the shell, I switched to TCL/TK and X.I taught the clerk how to open the files to be filtered and sent to the LPT port, to print and hand out pages and never highlight again. It was around 1995, before Windows 95.Do not fuck around, put what you learn to use.

My timeline is getting fudged as grow older, I came to the US in 1989 August, 21 years old. Withing a year I was a regular in the local public library learning English, reading about computers and buying my first DOS 5.0 386DX to learn AutoCAD.I was in community college in 1993 for an associate, and Google was a new thing. I wrote my English 103 paper titled "Classroom in a Box: Meet your Microprofessor". I got an A, and a plus for the "creative title". For my Speech on Google I got also an A, although I never lost my heavy European accent.Self-training is EVERYTHING. You must be motivated and you must be competent to a degree. I got the A+, the Network+ while GNU was new. By the time COMPTIA was doing GNU I did not need any more certs from anyone.I wish kids would learn a trade (vocational schools) before they go to college, university, and learn to hate the job they paid to train. You do not need a degree to prove yourself. Often you need one to hide.

Well then, we can discuss DNSSEC and DANE if and when you care.I specialized in a very limited set of tools over the years to save time an effort. Most people agree that the RFCs are to "advise the upstream", and thus everyone in the downstream agree that compliance is to a practical level. When it comes to technology I disregard politically motivated arguments. The tree-huggers might want you to flush the toilet with less water, but once the shit floats to the top they will abandon ideology for practicality. That reminds me, I need to update the DNSKEY on my domain:https://dnsviz.net/d/kane-il.us/dnssec/I host my top zone DNS, not because I do not trust my registrar or my ISP. I host it to learn and maintain a useful skill :D

I updated the key, and soon the 40576 id is going to be replaced with a 54038 id.I find it important to allow the DNS key expire in every 30 days or so. It has created some opportunities to educate people about the purpose and about the operation of DNSSEC, and I am hoping more of the same taking place over the Fediverse.
