@noagendashowvideo @Viking I use a Netgear Nighthawk R7000. Original firmware needed reboots almost every month. Since putting dd-wrt on it it has been running solid for about 5 years or so.

@Viking I've been using pfesense on a cheap Celeron J1900 motherboard for many years now. It works and only pulls about 15 watts.https://www.ebay.com/itm/235057148184?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=7a-LkiHaQj2&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=7a-LkiHaQj2&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=SMS

@noagendashowvideo @Viking $350 that's insane price gouging, you can run openwrt or DD-WRT on a ton of routers out there. My old Linksys WRT54G finally went out, at least the Wi-Fi part did. I got at least 10 years of DD-WRT use out of it with no problems. I swapped in an Asus that has a a corporate derivative of wrt on it that I got on sale for $40.Since it's already blessed w/an update webpage, a simple firmware file upload would let me install any pure DD-WRT or openwrt build.

@Thesleepwalker pfsense would do the job, I would need 2 ports.I have an 8 port gigabit switch, and I don't rely on my router for wifi, only DNS and assigning IP adresses.I have 3 deco M9 pucks for wifi.https://www.tp-link.com/us/deco-mesh-wifi/product-family/deco-m9-plus/

@methos @Klaatu @noagendashowvideo That one looks solid. But looks quite a bit more expensive than a mini-pc, after adding ram and SSD.

@ned @noagendashowvideo I have an Asus TM-AC1900 with a cellphone base station, which I don't need.Reboot when it acts up, perhaps monthly, yesterday it acted up so badly that I needed to hard reset it.I don't rely on the router for wifi, so I can replace with a pfsense.

@Viking Having a computer with 2 NICs is all you need for PFSense. For my setup I have Comcast go into the PFSense firewall. This goes out to a gigabit switch. You could use PFSense as DHCP, but I use a raspberry pi with pihole for DHCP and DNS. I have 2 routers in wifi only mode for wireless.

@Thesleepwalker @noagendashowvideo @ned @methos @Klaatu @stike @oneover I went with a tiny celeron with two Gb NICs.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B4RMLCH7/I am braving the possibility that there are suboptimal Ethernet drivers, but that seems to be a solved problem. Pfsense seems to recommend intel NICs, but this is just a tiny household, and unlikely multiple people are streaming at the same time.
