Last night my husband asked "When do you think we'll see serious action on climate change in the US?"We thought about it together & decided if we have a summer where it's hot & the power goes out for a week & in more than one major metro area that isn't in a generally hot region-- then... then maybe people will get it.That's gonna kill a lot of people. But on the bright(???🙁?) side this will probably happen in the next few years. We talked about how to make our neighborhood more ready.

Generators are difficult, but to keep a fridge going for medicine and critical food supplies we could safely put one on the roof. There may be changes that can be made to the building to better manage heat, does everyone have sun curtains? Can we improve windows?Older people may not be able to stay in the building, I think there would be cooling centers, but how do we do transportation? What foods can we make without a fridge or using much heat? We have ways to boil water.research time!

@futurebird Peltier fridges don't use much energy, do they? I suppose it mostly depends on how often they are opened, how big is the door, and whether it is on the side or on the top. I would think that one can develop a small Peltier fridge that can be powered by a couple of smallish solar panels and a relatively small battery. No?

@JorgeStolfi @futurebird Alas, Peltier junction, thermoelectric cooler diodes are about 2 to 5% power efficiency. They're good enough for sucking the heat out of a small space (eg. CPU chip) but conventional A/C is much better (if not good). Heat pumps are the best mechanical heat movers.

@futurebird Sadly I think you are correct.

@tomjennings @JorgeStolfi @futurebird Conventional AC is a heat pump.It is just they are better on the heat side because the waste heat goes out the hot side too...

@tomjennings @JorgeStolfi @futurebird Look for a Danfoss-compressor or swing-compressor fridge. Lots of portable "camping fridge" stuff out there from brands like Bodega, Engel, Dometic. MUCH more efficient than conventional compressors in fridges, more effective and efficient than Peltier coolers. Often marketed in some configurations as "solar refrigerators" in larger sizes.
