First article from me for @thespacebar: a detailed look at VisiCalc, the first mainstream spreadsheet program and perhaps the first example of a "killer app". https://www.spacebar.news/p/visicalc-the-first-killer-app

Second article from me for @thespacebar: why you should NOT use Brave Browser. I've been meaning to write this for a long time but never got around to it. https://www.spacebar.news/p/stop-using-brave-browser

@corbin @thespacebar I use both Brave and Firefox. I respect your opinion but I have found Brave to be a decent browser. It's fingerprint blocking is second only to librewolf which has it's own limitations.I may not agree with the creators politics, but same goes for Mozilla. So I'll use what works for me and mind my own business.

@wtwagg @corbin @thespacebar Stop being complicit and uninstall that shit. I loved Brave but as soon as I found out about the founders views and got rid of that shit with the quickness.

@BlackAzizAnansi @corbin @thespacebar First of all, using Brave doesn't make me complicit or benefit him. And I choose my software based on my needs and not to make some political statement.Secondly, I do believe that some people make faith based decisions that you might call hate while they harbor no such feelings.Lastly, thank you for your opinion. We don't have to agree to be friends.

@corbin @thespacebar F*ck... i got out of Chrome and have been using Brave ever since... I've been doing well with the browser, the only thing that doesn't work for me is the integration with cryptosh*t. And the ideology and position of the people behind everything seems real crappy to me... But, which browser do you recommend then? Firefox? Vivaldi? Opera?

@Bislick Firefox is fine, I haven’t seen anything terrible about Vivaldi (though it’s not 100% open source like desktop FF)

@corbin short form: Vivaldi did a "come check out our RSS feed reader" video and they had like three feeds selected. CNN, NBC, and Dan motherfucking Bongino. And that was the day I went back to Opera.

@alexhammy Opera's pretty bad: https://www.theregister.com/2020/01/21/opera_accused_predatory_loans/I pulled all my extensions from Opera a while back, partially because of the predatory loans, but also because their support staff was really bad and was always super slow to approve updates

@vertigo oh, I personally think the ambiguity tends to be cleared up on context, BUT I can see how that is not enough. Maybe something like the emoji reactions available in basically everything except Mastodon could help?

@corbin @thespacebar starts with an ad-hominem (Eich is bad, therefore Brave is bad) and continues with the string of usual accusations which are either wrong or presented with a clear bias against the project.Let's make a deal: find a browser that provides an alternative to support web business and content creators that does not depend on fraud-filled ad dollars from Google/Doubleclick or Facebook/Meta, and I will gladly switch.

@raphael If there's a specific detail that is wrong and you can point it out, I'm happy to fix it. As I said at the end of the article, the way to support sites/creators is to pay them with the support methods they already support.

@corbin is there any patreon-style platform that supports micropayments? Patreon-style support turns funding into a popularity game. I can buy $10 worth of BAT and support a bunch of different people, if more people did the same then we could cut Google out of the system. With patreon, just the fees alone would cut a significant chunk of my "support power".Also, is there any ad platform that shares the revenue with the users?

@corbin but most important, your article makes the same flawed arguments as all the critics: it establishes Brave as "unethical" but fails to provide a better alternative. Chrome is Google, so that disqualifies it. Bing is crap from MS. Mozilla/Firefox takes money from Google, also made terrible choices in the last years (pocket, ads in the home page) and acts as *controlled opposition*, giving users the "illusion of freedom" with no real credible threat to their biggest sponsors.

@raphael Pretty big difference:- Google: Advertising and effective browser monopoly, but also has a decent product and has invested a lot of time and money into web standards and making web apps better- Mozilla/Apple: Makes mistakes, but generally puts the user first, even over opposition from the advertising industry and some web developers, also engages in web standards- Brave: Has some good defaults but is neck-deep in the corrupt and poorly-regulated crypto industry, also fuck Eich

@raphael Sites that have PayPal, KoFi, or direct payment links generally let you do one-time payments with variable amounts. If you're splitting $10 across "a bunch of different people" that isn't really enough to make any kind of a difference for each individual creator, especially since it could lose even more value when it's time to convert BAT to actual money.

@corbin speaking as a Brave user for many years: they have many problems, but none of them are related to the usual cheap shots that the biased people throw at it.
