HJKL, the vi keys were never intended to be faster or be ergonomic, these are all explanations applied after the fact. The real reason is Bill Joy made vi on an ADM-3A which had it's arrow keys on HJKL.

@BrodieOnLinux As a vim heretic who still uses the arrow keys a lot, this will be my excuse from now on.

@arnelson Technically Bill Joy used the arrow keys as well, they were just placed differently

@BrodieOnLinux Now I can say this to vim purists who get mad at me when I say I've switched hjkl to noei!

@BrodieOnLinux Yes. This makes the adherence to this convention and refusal to change (and even the refusal to allow or obfuscation of rebinding) all the more infuriatingly idiotic. All because people don't want to re-train their muscle memory they adhere to a convention that was created when nobody knew what they were doing.Even worse, we're condemned to this unless we want to re-bind those controls on every CLI application that uses them, assuming it's even possible without forking the thing

@tkk13909 I assume you're not a qwerty user, otherwise those seem completely random

@BrodieOnLinux Yeah I use workman. I also have moved the vim keys to the right (the equivalent of hjkl > jkl;) because that's where my right hand sits on the home row and I swapped the position of the up/down keys because using myiddle finger to go down and my ring finger to go up never made sense to me. All in all, it amounts to hjkl > jlk;

@BrodieOnLinux But somebody decided to put those arrows on those keys before that. Probably some keyboard designer with a very keen UX/ergonomics mind.

@frank That feels like a stretch for a video terminal from 1976

@BrodieOnLinux escape and control keys were also more accessible (current tab and caps lock). Vim/emacs default keybindings are absolute cancer for modern keyboards.

@romin @BrodieOnLinux I dunno about cancer but they require more wrist dexterity than your normal home row typist has

@prettygood @BrodieOnLinux they also make wrist pain to appear awfully faster.
