KKR buying Simon & Schuster seems bad. https://deadline.com/2023/08/simon-and-schuster-paramount-global-kkr-book-publishing-1235454726/I was just reading yesterday how KKR is making the Libby app much worse, harming libraries and library patrons.https://karawynn.substack.com/p/the-coming-enshittification-of-public-libraries

@grammargirl In what ways could their involvement affect libraries and/or library patrons? I’m currently enjoying #KillersoftheFlowerMoon through the college library where I work.

@grammargirl Private equity companies by and large seem to ruin companies. From what I've read and heard, Barnes and Noble is an exception to that rule. Although, I get the feeling that is due in large part to the CEO that was installed. He seems to be a genuine book person and so is almost certainly an extreme outlier.

@clintn The article explains it better than I can, but the KKR problems with Libby have to do with how library catalogs are managed on the back end and the process for asking your library to get a book.

@grammargirl there's speculation in the wynn article as to what data libby could have been harvesting since the 2020 kkr purchase. app vendors typically acknowledge far less than what they actually do. 'common sense media', which rates app safety particularly with respect to keeping kids safe, had a look at libby. the result, though incomplete, is not comforting, finding tracking and ad targeting across third-party sites.https://privacy.commonsense.org/evaluation/Libby-by-OverDrive

@grammargirl Well, it turns out I wasn't just losing my mind and that Libby had gotten worse.

@grammargirl I just noticed today that my Libby history is missing for 2021 ( I like to reread things...)

@grammargirl Oh, good, more airplane reading and less literary stuff to pulp, or so says KKR, which will bleed the life out of a venerable publisher for a few more acres in the Hamptons.
