What would be a fair #copyright period, balancing the rights of creators and the public?I'd suggest 25 years or to the end of the creator's life, whichever is longer.

Copyright is regularly used by cops to censor police violence incidents, by abusive exes to continue abuse, and exists primarily to prevent non corporations from creating new works.It doesn't finance new works, just look at the clusterfuck that is modern movie making and all the free labor script writers are forced to do because only the Studios (IP owners) are allowed to create culture.#censorship #copyright #copyrightistheft

@david_megginson I want a world where artists and authors don't starve, and that's the exact opposite of the world of copyright (where corporations can lay claim to the works of others while censoring new works).We need UBI or better direct financing methods (though Patreon helps), not a tool of abusive publishers, record labels, and studios.#copyrightistheft

@Aknorals I understand your PoV — when it's my choice, I release code, data, and documents as public domain, b/c I consider even FOSS/CC licenses too restrictive (they still involve a #copyright claim).But I'm a white guy born into the professional class, child of a teacher and a lawyer, and I earned a decent income as a consultant before I was sick. I recognise that there is a strong racial and gender component involved in the ability to make a living from code, data, or art, even with #UBI.

@Aknorals White people who grew up in economic security (even if money is tight at the moment) find funding sources like #Patreon a bit light-hearted—cf links like "Buy me a coffee on X"—but they might feel too much like charity or panhandling to racialised ppl or to ppl who haven't always been food- and shelter-secure.#Copyright isn't a good solution, but with tighter limits it might be the least bad one, until we figure out a way to pay #creators that doesn't depend on passing a virtual hat.

@lispi314 @Aknorals But the problem then was that the patrons (the rich and powerful, such as kings, queens, and barons) had undue influence over art. It also led to corruption — Chaucer, for example, got a senior customs job not because he was necessarily good at it, but as a reward (and a good opportunity to make extra money on the side).Copyright in intent democratised art by freeing the artist from having to serve a single patron. .../more

@lispi314 @Aknorals ... but in practice it's been grossly distorted, especially by corporations like Disney and academic publishers, so we've lost the original balance between the creators' and the public's rights, and much of the direct benefit to the creator.
