@ThisPlaceAgain I went to Mastodon when Twitter reached terminal enshittification. But everyone has their own peer groups they want or need to be in contact with, and make their choices accordingly.Mind you, I still hope they will all end up on the Fediverse eventually. But I'm not going to judge them either way.

@ThisPlaceAgain I see it like this:The Fediverse has the opportunity for getting better. It's no guarantee, but the possibility is there.However, the other platform will inevitably get worse as they follow the usual enshittification cycle of modern-day tech platforms.

@ThisPlaceAgain @juergen_hubert I think in the past I’d become so used to being a digital migrant from 94-08 bouncing from social platform to social platform as they evolved and mutated and died or flourished for awhile until Twitter. Twitter was a much long arc for me. I was there longer than my kids have been alive and one of them is starting high school next year. I think we want our platform to work but it might be another case of having to bounce around again for awhile.

And I don't even care about search or quoting or any of that crap. I'm fine being nomadic. I wish my friends were. None of my IRL daily friends use anything federated.

And it creates in front of you a melding of those peoples posts and photos. When you reply it posts to the right system. When s new system appears, code to login, read, post, needs adding (modular). @tomjennings @ThisPlaceAgain @juergen_hubert you’re describing Trillian for Social Media.I would also like this (maybe Tapbots can build this app) but ideally I’d like a bridge connector so I could have a conversation across platforms with people who are on different services. We’re describing the fediverse I think - but there will need to be a bridge built to incorporate ATproto at some point if BlueSky does gain traction

@ThisPlaceAgain @tomjennings @juergen_hubert I just want an app focused on communication not flipping short video after short video and maybe has a good cross section of viewpoints and interests. I don’t care if it’s the dominant app. I’d rather a platform have 800k good contributors to a platform than whatever Twitter and Threads have turned into or are becoming. I can’t follow 800k people anyhow so dominance isn’t important. But dammit I do want quote posts.

Yes, I am still bitter about that.Then I switched to Twitter until Elon Musk happened.I feel I am getting too old to switch my primary social media account every few years (and lose most of my connections in the process). And that makes the #Fediverse very, very appealing right now.

I'm not a journalist or writer, so I have no monetary need for numbers. I only know so many irl people and of course more I know online only. But the latter is inherently ephemeral (though online friends often become long term).I do have many or most of my long term irl friends stuck on Facebook. It was painful to delete FB for this reason. But I couldn't feed that parasite any more, and it was constantly angering as we've all discussed.My long term friends I see or phone or text or email.

@tomjennings @juergen_hubert @ThisPlaceAgain as someone who has had a lot of followers and more commonly had a very modest amount I can generally tell there there’s a sweet spot between 2K and 10k where you have pretty good engagement on most posts that generates fun conversation and overall good banter - If you have fewer than a thousand followers it’s often just void shouting. Sometimes you’ll see traction and conversation but often not much if any. If you have much more than 10k your mentions and notifications become a deluge of nonsense on most platforms. It all depends on your goals. If you’re here to consume then you don’t need followers. If you’re here to contribute to convos you don’t really need followers. But if you’re here to have a voice of some sort it helps if there are folks to listen and amplify it.
