“Pay no attention to the USB port behind the “no USB” sticker. Is covering a printer’s USB port with a sticker to push people into wireless printing the worst thing HP does with its hardware? Not remotely. Is it still pretty funny to watch someone just take off the sticker and plug their printer in? I think so.” https://www.theverge.com/2023/8/4/23820710/pay-no-attention-to-the-usb-port-behind-the-no-usb-stickerFriends don't let friends buy HP. I’m Team Brother Laser, but everyone seems to have their own personal favorite. But not HP.

@tek In some ways HP is my alma mater in The Industry.I will Not buy HP printers at all. Especially with their new "Subscription Ink" bullshit (printer phones home you're out of magenta again and a magenta cartridge shows up...no, I mean No, Hell No). And I'm printing in black asshat, print without magenta. But I was done when they chipped the cartridge like a Keurig Cup.I recently had cause to buy a printer/scanner and the only sane choice was Brother.

@lordbowlich For real? Nooooo! That breaks my heart! My current one’s warned me about low toner for the last 2 years or so but keeps going.

@elfin Yup. I had a LaserJet 1200n that could stand up to a Soviet tank. There’s no plausible scenario where I’d subscribe to ink. Just... no.For scanners: the ScanSnap iX500 is the last model that humanity needed to invent. That's it. It's perfection. Close the labs. We're done here.

@tek I'm still recovering from the roommate HP printer drama last fall. I have never, in my life, been part of such a needlessly complicated, multiple-day tech shenanigans. And all so we could print in the living room, from our bedrooms! The SANS test was more clear and straightforward.Fuck HP, I'd rather buy a manual printing press.

@GeoffWozniak That’s why I ended up replacing the old one.Inkjets are completely dead to me. My use case is that I rarely ever want to print something that requires great color accuracy, like photos. When that happens I sent it to the local pharmacy for a couple bucks.

@lordbowlich @GeoffWozniak I have a Kobo Libra 2. I just realized that an e-ink screen causes a certain amount of waste to manufacture, but that printers don't come from thin air with no eco footprint.

@tek I used to like HP because at one time their printers were 99% likely to "just work" with #CUPS. Also, Lexmarks were garbage. HP sucks because of the vendor lock-in of the firmware of some models. The E series, I think. The solution to crappy firmware is to disassemble the firmware, figure out how it works, and write an open source replacement that shares no more code with the original than is absolutely required to make it work.

@tek @lordbowlich @GeoffWozniak I've got the Kobo H2O model from way back, but I find the screen too small for academic PDFs. If only there was some digital format that wasn't intended as a way to share statically typeset documents bound for the printers.

@tek The 1200n and a few others could take a Tandem-Warhead HEAT Round ... you might have to replace the fuser and vacuum the toner dust out, but they'd still work. (Also laser printers...not this inkjet stuff, very different animals.)

@tek I swore off printers some years ago, so watch this hot mess from a mostly safe distance, but it still shocks me how much people have let companies like these (not just printer companies!) get worse and worse anti-consumer practices.Does a company have to start actually shooting its users before people actually stop and say "hey, wait, maybe it's possibly not ok for them to do that?"

@tek In my brief stint in sales when I was the 17-Year Old Smart Kid I sold the original HP 550DJ and the HP 750DJ Color (And their cost was almost exactly their model number no kidding) it was Huge. People could afford laser quality at a 1/3 to 1/4 the barrier to entry but upkeep was 1/10 of TCO.Naturally An Executive figured out a way to completely fuck that up.It might actually be cheaper and easier to own a laser these days.(Dunno, I'm a Unix guy so I "print" to files, as is proper.)

@tek I said I'm not quoting @Pluralstic but I've got to bring Enshitification into the conversation with HARDWARE and not just media.Capture market with great ideas and service, erode to claw back valuation, soak users, die.My buddy was so proud of his Generation One Keurig because it would make coffee from pretty much anything you put in it (including the "recycled plastic" adapter that made grounds ) because it wasn't "smart" enough to see the DRM. Worked Great!

@tek @juliewebgirl So my storage facility got broken into a few weeks ago and my unit got hit.Lost tools and a compound bow (gift from a friend) but I lost a IBM Thinkpad T42P. I had built a phased array antenna into the lid (space) on two circuit boards that work like modern Wi-Fi Routers and could hit an SBux from 10mi if I had LOS and the uphill.TSA thought it was a bomb. I had to take it apart twice in the airport.

@tek The redeeming factor concerning HP is that their older laserjet printers just keep working. No wifi to mess with. No detector built in to see if you are using HP toner.I have two HP LaserJet P2055dn that are connected via ethernet, also does duplex.I dread the point when I will have to replace them. They've been going strong for almost 15 years so far. 🤞

@tek My understanding is that the HP family had some sort of rift. The quality went down after that.Today, HP seems to be just a brand sold to whatever company is willing to pay to slap the name on their products.Got a brother laser printer. What I like about it is that it works with Linux.
