Today I installed (but not yet configured) a #tplink #tp-link EAP610 WiFi access point in our ceiling. The junction box I installed and wired last month, but didn't order the hot spot and related hardware until the beginning of this month.I am still waiting on the TP-Link OC200 hardware controller, it is supposed to arrive some time between the 10th and the 14th.Two additional hot spot locations are wired but waiting before ordering. This 🧵 explains why I chose TP-Link. #Network #infosec +

We had a two WiFi hot spot system, a #NetGear AC1750 with one antenna arm that keeps falling down, it's about 7 years old and was on west side of the house - and a NetGear WAP on the east side of the house that was only a few years old but failed. We had bought three different NetGear 8 port gigabit switches in last couple of months that either were DOA or died within a year. I have a 9 year old Netgear gigabit switch still going strong, but the newer ones aren't same quality.🧵+

I have no doubt that the high-end #NetGear stuff is still good, but I have lost all faith in the quality of their consumer for the home. The very affordable #TPLink #TP-Link 8 port gigabit switches I replaced the failed Netgear switches with are clearly higher quality, so when the east-side WAP died, I decided to transition the house to TP-Link.🧵+

I do not like the idea of cloud or app management, I don't trust the security of either, but #TP-Link has a hardware controller (OC200 for consumer level stuff, OC300 for larger scale) and it looks like devices managed by it will use the last setting that worked if the hardware controller dies, so it's not a single point of failure.Rather than go with a router that has WiFi, I opted for a Gigabit VPN router. It allows multiple WAN sources which we might use.🧵+

Currently we just have Sonic Fiber but when I rewired the coax in the house, I set it for DOCSIS 4 compatibility, and it may be useful to load balance between Fiber Optic and DOCSIS so that if one goes out, we still have Internet.Anyway, that router doesn't do WiFi.So for WiFi, I put three holes in the ceiling and wired them for PoE powered WiFi hot spots. One on south side of house central between east and west, one north-west, and one north-east.🧵+

They are to be powered by a #TPLink #TP-Link 5 port gigabit PoE switch (four PoE and one uplink).Three PoE ports for the ceiling mount WiFi access points, and one for the #Omada OC200 controller.I used my Klein Scout Pro 3 to verify the termination and the PoE functionality although PoE has only been tested without a load. 65W should be enough though.🧵+

Everything for the transition was wired before I ordered the network equipment except I only ordered one access point because I want to give it a good test before buying the other two. It's all here except for the #Omada OC200, I guess they were out of stock. They estimate I should have it sometime between the 10th and 14th inclusive.I could manually configure them, but I'll wait for it to arrive before switching the network over to #TPLink #TP-Link Omada controlled.🧵+

I have no idea whether or not I made the right decision, but based upon the better quality of their inexpensive dumb switches compared to #NetGear, I suspect I did make the right decision and #TPLink #TP-Link #Omada is a better choice for homes with lots of adults that aren't served well by a single WAP./end 🧵
