I'm actually super happy most if not all 'space laser' projects have failed so farThe Russians tried to launch one decades ago but luckily it burned up with a failed launchI think the US also 'gave up' on this but imagine a country having a lazer in space ready to destoy any target they want anywhere on the planetAltough I wouldn't be surprised if a country has launched this already but without us knowing..I love space and I love lasers but not as a weapon together :blobfoxsignno:

@stux Agreed! Space should not be weaponized.

@stux there was an idea as deterrence against nukes but was not scientifically plausible.Lasers really do not work like in movies.

@peteriskrisjanis Indeed! Only with super clear weather and on a reasonable distance they /could/ melt the engine etc but the chances of that going right are slim

@stux I don't think such an idea would really work anyway. One cloud, plane, balloon, etc and your laser is going off target or dissipating. You'd have to treat a space laser firing like a rocket launch

@stux The science behind giant lasers in space is... iffy. The "Strategic Defense Initiative" was originally supposed to be an X-ray laser powered by a nuclear warhead. Fortunately even in the 80s they test that on the ground and it turned out to the shock of no adult in the room this was a stupid idea that didn't work.

@stux the only kind of "#SpaceLazer" I like are for Intersatellite Links, which makes them more efficient and harder to snoop than RF based links. Also it allows for higher transfer speeds, something that is crucial for communication of low earth orbiting satellites used for survey. In short #SpaceLaser|s are good but only as a form of #Laser-based optical links in #Space.

@stux @nuncio in that regard, Laser weapons already work: They just fry the optics of missiles used to acquire a lock on a target.

@stux According to space laser expert, Marjorie Three Toes Greene, the U.S. already has space lasers and uses them to burn whole forests to the ground.

@stux more immediately concerning are ground-based lasers used to overload satellite optical systems.

@stux see also "beaming solar energy to ground from orbit." It's being hailed as a green energy thing, but swing the beam away from the receiver and it goes… energy, energy, energy, DEATH RAY, energy, energy.

@oddhack Indeed, and more common and realistic If a simple store bought laser can annoy/endanger airplane pilots I can only imagine what a powerful one can do

@stux Why not just launch a shiny aluminum parabola up into space, aim that, then fire the laser from somewhere easy on Earth, up to the shiny, then down to hot illuminated death below? We could set it spinning and do earth carving artwork, it would be a huge waste of money, but that’s really vogue for late dystopian 21st century “they did it to themselves” aesthetic. :)Could use the laser to pick off Starlink nits while we’re at it. Socially groom Low Earth Orbit. :)

@stux meh. Space weapons are themselves incredibly vulnerable. A bucket of gravel tossed into opposing orbit will take them out with hundreds of 34,000 miles per hour shrapnel.

@stux Military tech that doesn't work - you always wonder if it does actually.. But is it so awesome that they purposefully spread disinformation to make everyone think it doesn't work. But if someone suddenly launched a nuke, would it magically go *poof* midflight for reasons unknown.Or like all the failed tests of interceptors for taking out hypersonic missles... If I miss the missile by exactly 1 mile, but my plan was to miss by exactly 1 mile, then maybe I actually aced my test?
