I had been putting off setting up my next server until Hetzner supported #Debian Bookworm.Looks like they finally do!

I had might as well bring you all on this journey.I tend to continue with the default config, some say its because I don't understand; in reality its good enough for my needs and I don't care for the details.

Actually I lied, I do care about the details. Or rather the hostname. It needs to be :moose:

I genuinely enjoy the Hetzner server installer. It is extremely nice to use and gives an excellent amount of feedback in comparison to other suppliers I have used whom only give you a red or green circle (which is terrible UX)

We're in! I quickly uploaded my MOTD files from https://github.com/photogabble/server-motd and reconnected.I'm likely to be the only person to see this, but #TextMode interfaces make me smile. You can tell that UX is important to me because the indicators for service status are not only colour coded but different shapes to make it easy to see even if you can't see colour.

Looks like there where updates available and now a quick reboot is required before I continue with installing https://dokku.com/

Well that's not a good sign. The system has rebooted but I am unable to connect via SSH. Going to try switching it off and on again in the hope that it comes back up and then if it does, check the logs to discover why.

After waiting a long 20 minutes for the server to reboot I hit the power button (remotely) and it came back up from being power cycled within three minutes.A quick look at journalctl shows nothing of concern, it seems that it shutdown successfully, I am unsure why it didn't reboot.Going to try again now.

It looks as though in #Debian 12 (bookworm) that using shutdown -r now brings the system offline but does not reboot it as expected. Is this a known bug? My searches don't show anything.

@carbontwelve I tried "sudo shutdown -r now" on Debian11 and it worked fine there.

Further experimenting seems to show that using the reboot command will in-fact reboot the server. However using shutdown -r now will shutdown the system and then fail to reboot. From looking at the system log in both cases it safely shutsdown except in the case of failing to reboot I have had to power-cycle the server. This has to be a known bug in #Debian right?

When using `shutdown -r now` the system says it is rebooting; however at the end of the log before the system appears to halt.Having checked the log from a successful reboot using just the `reboot` command it's very similar; so why the different behaviour?

Ah, so shutdown is a symlink to systemctl.So when I am doing `shutdown -r now` I am infact invoking `systemctl -r now` ??

@smallsees seems both `reboot` and `shutdown -r` work as expected. However if I do `shutdown -r now` the system halts but does not reboot.

@carbontwelve The difference is the "now"? That is very odd.You could try strace on both the now and now-less ones to see if there is anything different. Wonder what "shutdown -r +0" does.

@smallsees for now I have raised an issue with the systemd folk https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/28666I might reinstall Debian12 tomorrow and see if that fixes the problem or not.Although going forward i'll probably start using the reboot command instead.
