Why X remains the spot: Twitter won’t collapse as long as its users are trapped https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-why-x-remains-the-spot-a-transformed-twitter-has-trapped-its-user-base/

@JonChevreau As much as it resembles a collapsed building, no one is trapped on Twitter.

@JonChevreau Ex-Twitter¹ can collapse for other reasons besides users leaving — such as bankruptcy, fines, legal orders to leave the EU, technical failure, and so forth. All of these are on the table in the near future, simply because Musk is that spectacularly terrible at running it.I also strongly suspect, based on what I have seen among my friend circles elsewhere, there are also many people that are simply leaving Twitter rather than seeking an immediate alternative, particularly among those who do not have large audiences of followers or whose followers also know them on other platforms (YouTube, Discord, etc.).That being said: this article is very good, and Cory Doctorow is spot on. What is more tenuous for Ex-Twitter is not nearly as tenuous for Facebook, YouTube, and numerous other large online sites, which are moreover generally run by more capable figures than Musk, ones more adept at keeping users locked in.¹ I’m not calling it X, but it’s clearly no longer Twitter. I’m going to compromise and call it both in a way that still mocks the brand change.

@JonChevreau It's the friends and connections you make on Twitter that keep you there. There is nothing else. Deciding to leave is very difficult. You lose contact and touch with a lot of people that you have spent years building friendships with.Jamie

@jamieannmason @JonChevreau Can't groups of friends agree to jump to a new platform together?

@northernlights @JonChevreau In a perfect world, yes. But in real life, no, not really. The platform is what brought you together. Losing the platform takes it away. My opinion, and sadly, lived it when I migrated over from Twitter. Jamie

@jamieannmason @northernlights @JonChevreau That was my experience. A few people jumped here with me, but most of the group I hung with are still on Xitter. I have contact with some of them still on FB, but mostly they are gone for me. Makes me sad but…not sad enough to stay there.

@ML2 @JonChevreau We could always rechristen it "Shitter", or just the "Guano Site".

@ML2 @JonChevreau Feel free. I'm deadnaming it by referring to it as Twitter...
