At #FRZ, we don't have any place to defederate with the BBC. No one here has even brought it up yet.But if other instances to, that's their right. If their admins and users don't want to talk to another instance, for *any* reason, that's their decision. It's frustrating that we keep having the same conversation, which ultimately boils down to: You have the right to speak, not to be heard. We'll hit the mute button on anyone we collectively decide to. It’s no one else's business.

@tek I think I’m still pro-federating with Threads, if/when they open up. Fwiw!

Now, of course I have the right to have an opinion on other instances' actions. What I don't have is the moral authority to say that they're wrong or to insist they do things my way. It’s their decision.

@tek I admit the BBC has problems, but - to my knowledge - they're also consistently ranked as a reliable source. Plus, the more journalists - or really almost any mainstream org - we welcome to the fediverse just helps us grow. It increases our network effect. That's my .00000002 BTC nobody asked for.

@tek its important to be able to debunk the british propaganda machine, kinda hard to do that when u cant see what theyre saying. Its not like the meta situation where we were concerned about data collection imo

@case The vote here was very lopsided against federation, so we won’t be. I wrote about it at https://blog.freeradical.zone/post/we-will-block-facebook/If this instance were just me, I'd federate until it became a problem. Some other people raised some very worrisome concerns, though, and I could see how their risk of harm was much stronger than the potential benefits I’d imagined.

@redlilrascal That's my current thinking. The BBC has said things I strongly disagree with. I don't anticipate them being nasty neighbors in the same way that Gab would be.

@thenewoil I agree. I don't foresee them actively harassing users or scraping content to feed into an ad machine. If they want to post content that people might choose to read, fine.

@tek @case dumb question but if I follow people from threads, could I interact with them? Or is it a straight no?

@ryanchen @case Not a dumb question! But no, the votes were clear that we won't be connecting with them at all. The concerns were having any contact with them would allow Facebook with too much of our users’ information. I wrote more about it at https://blog.freeradical.zone/post/we-will-block-facebook/ .

@tek @redlilrascal Some instances will lean into outright defederating. But the biggest instance lead and moderated by members of the queer community I'm aware of, tech.lgbt, opted to just limit. So if BBC opts to publish more anti-trans nonsense it won't come up in my feed on my account there unless I opt to follow BBC accounts, and those who want to can still debunk the empire. It's nice that the fediverse allows for this kind of flexibility that works for all users of an instance

@kamenrunner @redlilrascal I think so too! And at any time, we can choose a different policy from tech.lgbt’s: we can both do what’s right for us. This is so much better than trying to come up with one plan that fits everyone.
