Why so many mass shootings? Sure, too many guns. But also the loss of community and atomization of man. Going and shooting up a place is an especially American way of lashing out; of saying that you are as mad as hell and not going to take it anymore. If "Network" was made today, Howard Beale would shoot up the studio.This is not apologia. It is no wonder that ppl today are alienated -- from their work, from govt, from their communities and one another. There are many attributable factors here: The loss of social capital, of social privilege, the hollowing out of the middle class and Gilded Age-levels of inequality. Rapid social and economic change provoke fear and anxiety. Political sorting+polarization make fellow citizens alien to us -- partisans of either party look at the opposition in bewilderment.

Case and Deaton's work on deaths of despair is instructive: First we saw rising rates of alcohol and drug deaths and suicide among middle-aged white men (those most reeling from economic+social factors that, rightly or wrongly, were most visibly affected by deindustrialization, globalization, and social progress). No longer can a HS graduate make a living off one paycheck. But white men are not unique and similar woes occur in segregated immigrant communities and oppressed minority groups.

I believe faith in free markets and liberal democratic norms -- in short, humanism -- substituted for a time, but no more. Society is now viewed as conflictual; consensual norms about what constitutes a good life and how that is obtained have fallen by the wayside and others are now viewed suspiciously, driven by ambition, greed, and the heartfelt sense of things falling apart. We are all indicted by a system that supplies us with neverending cheap crap sourced from slave labor and abhorrent work conditions overseas. We help to maintain a system wholly dependent on fossil fuels, environmental degradation, and overconsumption as we attempt futilely to keep up with the Musks and to make ends meet. We must avert our eyes or otherwise become paralyzed by these horrors. We would care but lack the time due to back-to-back work shifts and degrading employment.
