Currently my gf is taking driving lessons and we where just talking about driving big cars and trucksPersonally I do not feel safe driving a big car or truck simply because the bigger the vehicle the harder it is to controll it and my gf feels the sameI hear other people say they feel not safe in smaller cars because everyone around them is driving a tank and I also understand that I guessAt the end of the day I just leave the car I don't have and take the electric bike 🚲⚡

@stux There's a certain advantage in being higher up in larger vehicles. If you're new to driving the spatial awareness takes a while to develop. You always think the vehicle is much wider and longer than it is.

@sullybiker Indeed :blobcatgiggle: I'd rather not and keep it to smaller ones, even though im almost 2 meters haha!

@stux My instructor back in England always used to say "look at the gap" when getting nervous between cars. The normal tendency is to look at the car you're worried about hitting, which will cause you to move towards it...

@stux The 1948 Cadillac was a very heavy car.(The producers of Radar Men from the Moon, 1952, were prescient about gas-powered cars, as can be seen in this clip from the film)

@stux My real first driving experiences were with a 16 wheeler so "harder to control" gets mixed feelings here.Adaptation of course is key.One shouldn't operate a large machine in the same way one flies a kite. And that is the main problem I'm afraid.

@stux I learned to drive on a tractor initially, haha. Would not want something big for my daily driver. Too hard to find parking. I had a Honda Fit I loved, but they don't import them anymore.

@stux The bigger the car, the more support is build in.That makes driving more comfortable and safer.

@WvOostveen Maybe for the person inside the car but I'm sure pedestrians like to beg the differ :ablobwink: Maybe they'll be dead in 1 blow instead of half-alive, i guess that's a win?

@stux "Feeling 'safe'" pretty much falls into 2 fields. The first is 'I've been in this situation, before, survived or was injured, so that guides my sense of safety. The other is 'I've been hearing bad things about the world around me so I will arbitrarily tag things as safe or unsafe, and disregard the views of anyone else. What you describe seems to me to be the first variety, but I know plenty of folk who will declare it is the latter. Regardless, the e-bike option works for me.

@stux my former gf was dreading to drive any car because she hadn't driven any routinely after getting a license. Then she got a job 20km away and had to drive there with my toyota iq every day. That small car was perfect for getting rid of driving anxiety. Short, nimble, wheels in corners, enough power, easy to park. But somehow it was an asshole magnet.

@stux Personally I prefer to drive a small car over a big one because big cars like SUVs have less visibility.

@stux Interesting note… In the US where there are lots of big vehicles the safety stats for them are actually worst than smaller cars due to messed up centers of gravity. If you want to be safer, stay out of the bigger vehicles.

@sullybiker @stux the problem is that it turns into an arms race, unless it’s held in check by rules and regulations. Well, and the height of tunnels and such, I guess 😁

@stux You get used to driving what you drive. I used to prefer and own small cars. Now I live in the city, I've sold the car as I mainly cycle, walk places and public transport is pretty good. But I do have a campervan/motorhome. It's 6m long, which isn't too bad, but also 2.3m wide. It's certainly more mental effort to drive than a car. Having a drawer of kitchen implements behind you does encourage you to think further ahead and be more cautious! But when I'm in a car now, I feel vulnerable!

@stux I'm fine either way, but sometimes it can feel rather intimidating in a small car when all around the rest of the vehicles are massive by comparison. The last car I had before my current one was long but low. Sometimes it was very difficult to see when turning if taller vehicles were in the way. Sometimes I had to wait, even if I had the right of way, because I just couldn't see. Sometimes those in bigger vehicles were mean and kept moving to block my view.

@stux I now drive an EV "crossover" type car. It's still dwarfed by luxury SUVs that weigh a tonne more still (Mercedes, Range Rover, etc). Yet I feel like it's much bigger than my previous hatchback which was only slightly smaller width/length. The taller seat makes a difference along with the body shape so I definitely felt much more cautious driving around narrower roads than I did before, but it didn't make me feel any more or less safer than before. But I also rode bicycles and motorcycles years before driving, so I guess whatever tin can I'm driving in feels much safer 😅

@stux I drive a Peugeot 206 and my dad the other day asked if I could please reverse park his Dodge Ram. I’ve never felt less coordinated in a car despite it having rear view cameras and all those goodies, felt like I could hit a wall or another car anytime.Definitely agree with preferring the electric bike though! 🚲
