Why Americans love big carss not just a consumer choice; it’s a policy choice. It’s no secret that big cars dominate American roads. But even so, some of the stats are staggering: Last year, 80 percent of all new cars sold in the US were SUVs and trucks. That’s compared to just 52 percent in 2011. Meanwhile, many automakers are phasing out passenger cars as consumer demand for them has disappeared.#cars #USA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQDegCqiVnU

@stux I understand their weight is a problem for road infrastructure, but they still are passenger vehicles rather than trucks. I think a contributing part of the size is that roads in North America tend to be wider. They weren't built during times of horse and carriages for the most part, there was much more room to grow. No way some of these American vehicles could safely roam most European roads.

@stux My daughter loves her Honda Fit (very small) dreads the day it "dies" because Honda no longer sells them in US. It's all about the manufacturers' profit margin, much greater on bigger vehicles loaded with junky extras. 🚗

@stux I never finished learning how to drive. To paraphrase when a friend asked why not.“I don’t need to do it. Why did you never learn how to swim”?

@stux Very good video. Like much of American economy it stems not just frm consumer demand rather from more lenient regulation of MPG on SUVs. So car producers have had incentive for decades to make light trucks into luxury passenger vehicles.I loved the guy in the vid that said his family opted for an e-bike! In regards to safety it truly is a safety for me but nor for thee choice driving an SUV.All this said having driven an SUV i did love it. Bad for that to be the default passenger tho

@stux I hate them, but what choice do I have? If I drive a small one I’ll get crushed in an accident and I can’t see around them in traffic.

@stux It’s pathetic honestly, as an American who always found our best vehicles to be among our smallest: think about the 54’ Corvette. It’s art, it’s small, it’s perfect.
