       @jameshjacksonjr @cybette I think Activity Pub's federated protocol answers the main reticence I remember existing in the first years of Twitter among most mainstream news organizations: Twitter was and is ultimately a third party website not under their control. With Mastodon via ActivityPub, @BBC_News_Labs can mitigate the risk of an eccentric billionaire unilaterally destroying their social media account recognition.

I feel like freedom was lost during the consolidation following the bursting of the dotcom bubble of around 2000. Platforms become more conservative and vulnerable to chilling effects the more centralized moderation becomes. Effective moderation requires diplomats (in the Eve Online sense) who can navigate ambiguity and subtlety to resolve disputes, not trigger-happy ban bots.
