Renewables are better: A common confusion is that to decarbonize, the world will need to produce the equivalent of coal, oil & gas in the form of low-carbon energy. That's not true. Most fossil energy gets wasted. In the US, just one-third gets turned into useful services. The rest is wasted as heat.#CleanEnergy #ClimateCrisis

@KimPerales I doubt that any of that "wasted" energy can be effectively captured>#CleanEnergyThere is no such thing, and it's childish to think so.

[Reply] @KimPerales @CelloMomOnCars So true! (Cellomom made same great point recently.)Only thing nice thing about fossils, you can keep them stored in the tank till you really need to convert them.Recently I made a great discovery however: Dirty laundry can be stored as well untill the sun starts shining :-) so at least I have that usecase covered already.

@KimPerales never thought of that, that is big practical oversight if you ask me.

@KimPerales wasted as heat in what way? Would that same problem exist with renewables? Assuming not since it’s in a battery until needed

@KimPerales I would love to know how much heat is lost due to the past choice to stick to 110V

@KimPerales Excellent use of Sankey diagram here #DataViz. So many places this visualization makes the reader want more data & deeper looks!

@KimPerales Great chart! Fascinating and maybe hopeful if we improve efficiency. Is this the correct source? https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/articles/annual-energy-and-carbon-flow-charts-detail-us-energy-use-sources-and

@KimPerales Also, a substantial part of transportation is transporting fossil fuels and that would no longer br needed in a decarbonized world.

@KimPerales Wasted due to inefficiencies (a gas turbine doesn’t turn 100% of input into electricity) or just truly wasted (we don’t need this energy at this exact moment, we can’t store it, oh well)? That’s incredible.

@KimPerales what is a very typical waste (in heat)?

This is the article that Hannah Ritchie cites on the advantage of renewables bc fossil energy gets wasted: https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/articles/annual-energy-and-carbon-flow-charts-detail-us-energy-use-sources-and
