@stux This was my thinking in high school, too π Uh, erm... okay I still think it. I really would like aliens to come here and take over, they would have to be nice aliens though, and take away all the people who do things that are generally considered as bad for others, nature, environment, animals, and so on. @stux @galaxy_map The nuclear weapons are not the problem.Dictatorships coerce their populations, some have enormous populations (e.g. China) or conventional arsenals (Russia). Without nuclear weapons, war becomes an affordable risk for them, and we would need symmetrical armed forces to deter aggression. Back to the Maginot line, basically, and thank you but no thank you. Nuclear weapons are not the problem, aggressive dictatorships are.

With global warming, things really going all ways wrong, scaring people with nuclear war is just not gonna work.But you can't also fire one, because there is zero guarantee it won't escalate. And firing one might not do effect you desire.So while I do not expect properly triggered nuclear war, accidental kick off might happen.Humanity will still survive.

I tend to dismiss the predictions of somebody who is obviously rooting for one side or the other.To find somebody who was saying in early 2022 that Russia would occupy Ukraine, that's easy. But to find somebody who was saying in early 2022 that Russia would occupy Ukraine - but NOT Kiev - that is far harder.What honestly surprised me is the fact that I follow a number of geopolitics wonks on Twitter - the type of people who are supposed to give somber, realistic analyses, unclouded by their political positions. And guess what, they were clouded by their political positions - every single one of them thought Russia was going to get smashed within 6 months.
