Things I really want my phone to do:1. AM/FM radio. My 1999 flip phone could do it. We know the electronics is in there in pretty much every phone sold.MW/LW/SW and digital radio a bonus.2. Encrypted text messages through Bluetooth paired phones and/or relayed mesh networking without access to GSM telephone poles. You will never see this, because it will be deemed a security risk by every single government under the sun.3. Solar panels on the back for charging the battery.

@ParadeGrotesque Regarding 3: I had one phone that could do that. It was pretty much useless because of the surface/power ratio. But I agree nonetheless: this should be standard, by principle.

@ParadeGrotesque Solar charging from a panel the size of your phone would be too slow to be practical, but there are solar-charging battery packs, e.g., this one from Anker: https://www.anker.com/products/a1650?ref=search_Powercore%20solar&variant=40098677063830

@ParadeGrotesque I use several apps to access live radio broadcasts on my phone now. It’s especially helpful to find low power, public and community access stations across markets that I couldn’t get via antenna. You can!

@ParadeGrotesque The radio thing isn’t there because of tax brackets. Fun huh

@ParadeGrotesque Ah, that would be a nice function. So few radio stations broadcast with enough power to receive them where I live, other than giant corporate owned crap stations. I like local stations with a community connection. Ah, the old days of Pirate Radio!

@ParadeGrotesque Receivers have a higher tax brackets than phones. That’s why iphones never had am/fm/lw even though they had the potential. Early android phones had receivers as a value proposition in marketing

@ParadeGrotesque Hm, shouldn’t a Raspberry Pico + some buttons and an E-ink display be capable of this?

@ParadeGrotesque Re: 1) there are android phones that have Am/FM receivers but you need a headphone jack as the headphones are the antenna. You won’t see this on flagship phones. 2) this already exists in a sense, it’s just limited to Apple AirTags and the android equivalent. There are proof of concepts that use Find My to exfiltrate data. Very low bandwidth and very slow/unreliable. 3) need major advances in panel efficiency to make a phone sized panel useful to most

@ParadeGrotesque sorry for being a rando wandering into your mentions, but isn't 2) basically what the Briar app does? (which is also why I would love to see more of my friends adopt it)https://briarproject.org/(apologied if I misunderstood)
