Im having a surprisingly hard time explaining that saying things that aren't true is a common technique for making jokes and it's also not particularly heinous. I think the problem is that if you just hear my rough description and don't see what I'm talking about in context, it's gonna sound a lot more obnoxious than it is in practice.

@Owlor This is probably why those kinds of jokes come across better to me irl than online tbh

Cus like, yeah this could apply to the Goncharov thing where you pretend something exists and try to string people on for as long as possible, but what I was talking about and what I'm thinking about is deliberate absurdism, when it's pretty clear to everyone involved that what they are saying isn't true and the humor comes more from the fact that they are able to improvise something silly on the spot.

I was talking about how I've noticed this is a particularly common style of humor among artists and writers, mainly cus we're pretty regularly excercising our creative muscles, so we got a bit of an edge in that regard.

It's similar to how a lot of actors when joking around will tend towards making silly voices, cus that's something they can do on the spot that not everyone can.

@mrjunge Oh yeah, getting casual humor to come across in text has been a recurring problem online for basically as long as the internet existed.

@Owlor It's worse than my just not having the humor translated, but sometimes humor itself ironically becomes a source of misinfo for some people with less media literacy as well. Just look at people who respond seriously to Onion article headlines..
