wow, mass layoffs now also at a Google after Facebook - see attached picone must be careful nowadays as everything is in flux and changes: once upon a time I pondered to apply for a job at Amazon to work on AI for Alexa. Recently it transpired that Amazon laid off many people there as Alexa division is not profitable, brings loss. So reverse what I thought.Which jobs in IT industry are safe?:

@CSB @Pantangelini prototypes dont build themselves. it is a very very very tiny fraction of a percent. but present none the less. once the concept is proven machines are programmed to do it at scale.

@CSB study buggy whips I guess.I closed my 20+ years-old software dev consultancy last year after completing many paid jobs with chatgpt and I am going air gap with my entire life over the next two years - ranch, mile and miles from nearest neighbor. There are going to be two main IT roles preserved.1. Hands on labor - swap and install big iron, infrastructure. Robots soon though.2. AI engineers. I don't mean like you and I. I mean the people who actually own (and train) the computers.

@CSB I said that above. Cars too. Basically transport will all be owned by corps and you only go where they allow.AI is going to be that to. You either own the computers, or you are just doing some version of some other assholes bidding.

@CSB sysadmins are safer than most especially those that deal with the metal. Those companies that actually have metal will survive as they didn't bet all the chips into the cloud. And less sysadmins these days actually touch metal. Those that bet all in are getting reamed by cloud hosting charges.I have been hands on metal as a dude named ben since 1992 and hopefully will continue to do so until the end of my career.

@CSB correctI know of one Australian university that deeply regrets it's loss of its own hardware and now they are trapped in a cloud architecture that is going to cost them heaps to transition to hybrid especially after giving up its data centre

@rfrost and cloud providers sometimes increase prices and customers are locked inbut theoretically switching between cloud platforms should be easier but in practice is hard

@CSB yes . If you use software defined cloud infrastructure tools to abstract your cloud architecture you might have a more portable platform.
