Dear #MastodonAcademic, have any you budgeted for *writing time* when applying for research funding? I've never seen a grant bid that does so, which suggests that writing is not recognised as the #MethodOfEnquiry it is and is not accounted for in grant time. For example, budgeting for a #WritingRetreat or a project assistant to ensure grant holders have time to at least draft for the dissemination of their findings would seem reasonable to me but ....?#ResearchWriting #AcWri #HigherEducation

@serenissimaj Is writing time properly accounted for at all? Even for papers or other outputs it’s excepted to happen outwith core working hours. I have seen people add the funding to attend retreats but not sure if they specifically added the time…

@serenissimaj Having said that I’m working hard to make that writing time more visible and support people to write during their core hours…

@StephZihms @serenissimaj This is what we need. I actually feel guilty taking out a few hours to write during my working day. 20% of my contract is for research and writing, but other workload tasks take that time. Hence the guilt since I'm not done with admin!

@CathrynPearce @serenissimaj I would argue that showing how long admin tasks take - make time for other things might help showcase the issue…overwork and understaffed. There’s an exercise called the commitment inventory that might help protect time for research - https://stephaniezihms.blog/2021/06/04/the-commitment-inventory/

@StephZihms @serenissimaj Unfortunately, our UK universities know full well how long admin takes, sadly. They bank on the fact that we work excessive overtime hours -- hence the strikes right now. Workload modelling is a huge issue -- each year the admin requirements go up and the time allotted for it in the workload goes down. It doesn't include CPD, required training, etc. either. I will take a look at your resources. Thank you!
