We surprised each other while I was watering in the back corner of the yard this morning and it zipped back under the fence before I could get a photo but a few moments later it came back and went along the fence for a bit before disappearing back under to the woods behind our property. Posted to a local FB group to confirm the ID but 99% sure it’s a Plain-Bellied Water snake (they are non-venomous). About 3 foot (0.9m) judging by the fence boards.#snakes #BackYardWildlife #nature #photography

@Trilobyter Finding a snake in my garden would be absolute horror for me. 🙈

@AusderPampa my wife feels the same, she is looking out the windows now and jumping at every perceived movement she thinks she sees near our back fence. Earlier this year she found one, a tiny non-venomous one, that had snuck into our kitchen, oh what a scream. But there are a lot of snakes where we live so you just have to watch where you step & reach.

@Trilobyter I'm quite afraid of snakes, and I remember an episode as a teacher: I had to teach a class in the biology room and initially stood by my desk. As I walked through the rows of students, I only then noticed that there was a herbarium with a snake on my table. Fortunately, I managed to keep my cool. In contrast the two tarantulas right next to it were not a problem at all. 😅

@AusderPampa when younger I lived in a rental house near Galveston Bay that was infested with spiders, after that experience I think I would prefer to have to deal with snakes.

@MartinR seems that plain-bellied and yellow-bellied water snakes are the same species though yellow-bellied may be a sub-species. I’ve got a local expert here in the far northern part of the Houston metro area looking at my photo & he will tell me what it is.

Final confirmation from a local snake expert, it was a non-venomous Plain-Bellied Water Snake.
