A friend is awaiting a double lung transplant. Two operations canceled at last minute because the donor lungs were not in good enough shape. Now she's going in at 5 p.m. today. I hate that it means someone has passed, but am hoping so badly the third time is a charm for her and she comes through it okay.

Surgical teams worked through the night to give my friend a double lung transplant. It went well and her new lungs are working, though there is still a long road to recovery ahead. Please sign up to be an #OrganDonor if you are young enough! #GiftOfLife

@IdahoLark My dad didn't qualify for large organ donations, but his corneas went to Ireland and they were able to use his bones and some tendons and other soft tissue for grafting. So even if you don't think you're a candidate, you may be able to do some good!

@IdahoLark And even if you're no longer young! Even older people can provide useful second-hand parts.

@irina Ah, I knew that they can no longer use my marrow or a live liver donation since I am over 60, but I guess if you are dead and formerly healthy the other parts could be useful. Thanks.

@elmiller0330 Thanks! I guess I was thinking of "live" donations like bone marrow and partial liver, which has a cutoff of age 60. But you are right about deceased donations. And I was reminded that I had some donor bone put in my spine years ago.

@IdahoLark My best wishes to your friend. My niece had a double-lung transplant several years ago to treat her cystic fibrosis. It's amazing what medicine can do, isn't it?

@researchbuzz Aww, I'm sorry. I hope she got in some, unlabored breathing during her final time.

@IdahoLark True! I don't qualify for live organ donations because I'm on insulin, which is a shame because otherwise I would absolutely be on the marrow registry.
