@clive I’m finding that you can, to a large extent, choose your social environment. And when you treat people with respect & dignity it usually keeps things calm from the start. So, I dunno, the planet’s on freaking fire, computers are threatening to take over - stuff’s not very comfortable. Also, the Atlantic is getting it wrong a lot.

@clive We're of a similar age. I remember regular bullying and occasional fistfights as part of my childhood and youth. Can't imagine coming out in high school back then.

@clive One of my gripes with high tech these days is everybody now has to be nice. One can no longer say "What a stupid idea!", even though they are stupid ideas, we gotta pretend otherwise, even let stupid ideas win occasionally so they don't feel bad.

@clive Whatever my thoughts about "the world" when I was a child, it's clear to me today that I treat children differently than adults, and how we see the world has much to do with how the world sees us.

@clive Well, when I was a child it was a lot more common to hear racist and homophobic slurs. When I was in high school there was essentially a nationwide campaign to get kids to stop using "that's so gay" to mean "uncool." The unspoken question here is downhill for whom? Who is this article for, exactly?

@jason Yeah, it's not my sense of the world at allBut it's common enough that I hear it with some frequency when interviewing folks in my journalism -- incidental comments, just in the chitchat (I write about science and tech, not directly on partisan politics)

@clive "If it bleeds, it leads" is an old saying, but when I was growing up, bad news wasn't pushed constantly by such multitudes of people to a device I keep in my pocket, along with demands that I "bear witness". The dramatic increase in frequency, volume, and sources, along with a lowering of minimum standards has to have an effect.
