The "atheist because being forced to go to sunday service" thing is so fucking common. But as much as I want to joke about it, honestly starting to think maybe theres a reason behind it. Not just being lazy and a redditor, but an ACTUAL reason. Dont know how common it is, but at my church every service is like a cycle of go in, listen to a few of the 10 songs they know that have been on the christian radio station since 10-15 years ago, get another sermon on "jesus loves you", "dont be a hypocrite", "jesus died for you" and if were feeling crazy we get a bare bones explanation of a story we never heard.Seeing as I see this "atheist because of sunday" thing in other people besides faggy redditors (even though they never say they are specifically atheist, maybe theist?), It really makes me think theres room to improve

@ItsSkyDragonz An atheist here, who went through a few ceremons. Although, I am an atheist for a different reason.But ceremons do NOTHING for someone who doesn't belive. Hearing about Jesus's love for example is like hearing about the government that helps you...No matter how you argue it, you are wasting your life away listening to stories that mean nothing to you. So, I get, how that did grow a ton of resentment.Also, try to combine it to the world we grew up in. It was the world, where authority figures shat on our heads the entire time. So, listening to yet another authority to say how they care, just to ignore all the problems... again.... was not as persuasive as you might hope :D

@ItsSkyDragonz My church growing up did hardcore theology during the main Sunday sermons. Sunday School was preschool through 12 yrs old, you got all the regular Bible stories and the lessons, but you didn't know them yet at that age. At 13 you were in the main service and doing deep dives into Hebrew vs the KJV etymology, apologetics, Law vs grace, the many names of God, etc.It stuck pretty well for me and my friends. Over the years we got some backsliders, but zero fedora atheists.

There's truth to it. My church experience before joining the military was basically a mega church with Jesus rock, pastors driving luxury cars. Theologically it was as deep as a kiddy pool, and I learned more about running a 3 camera set up there than I did about their specific beliefs. Another was my stepdads friend, a negro huckster pastor who wore nice suits and drove a nice car while his "church" hopped from basement to storefront. I didn't go to church again for another 14 years.

@RowdyRamzan @ItsSkyDragonz It was freaky when i went in basic. People would have these emotional freak outs and break downs at the mkultra being spewed they start crying and grab me and hug me. Not single thing would be read from scripture though. Just jesus rock and boomer telling us jesus cares or some shit and then "prayer" which was just a brief moment of silence for you too think before the loud noises kicked in again and people were back too freaking out. I hated it. Dont know how people do it and they always seem to be the biggest ones.

There are churches with good pastors who find more depth, but once again ... you aren't going to get anything out of it unless you're a true believer. Some Christians have the idea of "planting the seed" ... and that every little bit of exposure to the Christian world view is a step closer to accepting Jesus.Evangelism seems to be about whittling people down emotionally to conform to a world view, and the same thing exists in the new atheists meetups and events of the 2010s .. which kinda fizzled and went nowhere.Also, a lot of churches today cater more to the Millennials and Zoomers ... no windows, dimly lit, band on stage with modern songs, lyrics on screens .. they feel more like youth retreats that church services. I went to a Calvary Chapel that was like this last year, and the pastor had some political stances and was more in debt than average. Still .. it was way too long ... and there is a growing divide between those who prefer traditional hymns and the growing modern worship services.

It's because that is all church services are anymore.Songs, and a feel good pep talk with emotionally charged preaching to get you high until the next visit.I guarantee you if you walked into a crowd and pulled an atheist a person of x religion and a Christian and asked them their beliefs and what it is to be a good person or whatever, their ideologies would along closer than most would think.The church has succumbed to the world and invited worldly teachings in.The Bible is the Word of God and that is power and truth. Christians no longer have that power and truth because they have abandoned the Word for a limp wristed version.I seen a thread earlier where someone thinks that "love your enemies" means you should love everyone.How is that? Did Peter love his enemies when he struck them down for lying about money? Did Paul love his enemies when he turned them over to Satan? Did Paul love his enemies when he said the Lord would repay Alexander the copper smith for what he did to him? Why did Jesus tell the apostles to take a sword?

Pandering may be the wrong word. It's the thing a lot of people seem to want in contemporary church services.There is something really neat about traditional church hymns. What's even better are Unitarian hymnals, which have the same styles of music, just with all the God and Jesus bits neutered.
