I miss movies without connected IP, with no ambition to spawn a "universe" and sequels that run for 90 minutes.

@tante I liked Nimona a lot. (technically there is IP, the original comics, and it runs for 100min, but still)

@tante I recall study done by a TV network (NBC?) before streaming got big. It was regarding why viewers didn't watch a particular series. The number one reason was the potential viewer was concerned they wouldn't know what was going on with the plot if they missed the first one. That's the way I feel about about all the sequels, prequels, etc. I'm not watching any of them as a result. Star Wars on Disney has become especially bad in that respect.

@tante this.My biggest gripe with the current movie scene. Well ... 'Current' ...Anyone remember being shocked to the core when Matrix turned out NOT to be done when the curtain fell after part 1? I sure was.

@tante sorry if the question is dumb but what does "IP" stand for in this context?

@tante @foax I am curious would Oppenheimer count as standalone? I liked that one a lot. However if standalone films based on books count I liked the following recent one: I found Bullet Train (2022). Im Westen nichts Neues (2022) was also pretty good. I also liked Tenet tbh (2020). And if you are in for a show recommendation: Bad Banks is a pretty good and relatively recent production from Germany and Luxemburg that I liked a lot.
