Here are the final results on my poll about the word “hopefully“ as a sentence adverb. These results are about what I expected. The biggest thing that surprised me about this poll is that over on Facebook, many people said they thought it was fine, except that the comma after “hopefully” is wrong. Which is weird! Because the comma is usually described as what makes it OK as a sentence adverb. If it doesn’t have a comma, that is when people usually argue that it means “in a hopeful manner.“

@grammargirl Using it in the "in a hopeful manner" sentence as the first word of a sentence or clause? Now THAT seems weird to me. 😀
