Do I need to utilise self-compassion and self-understanding in order to overcome toxic shame, in order to return to proper function - or do I just need to stop being such a sack of shit, and procrastinating?I'm going to continue rationally understanding the former to be true, while deeply believing the latter to be true, and continuing to implement this shameful worldview internally which I know from experience is extremely harmful to me, and totally counterproductive. Glad I had this talk, me

If you're dealing with shame, I find the best solution is to find your moral standings. If you can find a way to behave in a way in which you believe is moral, then you'll no longer feel shame.

@Tony I do mostly behave in accordance with my morals, insofar as I can. The issue is less so that I do things which are wrong, and more so that I, myself, am wrong, and deserve to feel this way

Yah, you just have to get over it. You're perfect the way you are. No one is ever going to "love you" so you need to love yourself first. Cut yourself a break, forgive yourself, have empathy for yourself, ect. You should put yourself first...Not to the detriment of others, but like you should love yourself. After all, you're all you have.

@Tony I understand all of these things, rationally. Different parts of my brain oftentimes have a hard time communicating with one another

And I think that’s the hard part. You need to put yourself first, and not be subject to outside influence breaking your sense of self. Ie - you’re perfect the way you are and no one can change that 😎

@fcktheworld587 my take on these same vibes is to practice self-compassion vigorously, and also recognize that progress on making my life better comes in baby steps, just a little at a time, and any good durable progress is a longterm project.my therapist advises we aim for tiny, measurable improvements, and then identify with those minuscule successes (rather than the mountain of shame)

@fcktheworld587 I guess you will one day reach the point where you understand it’s not all about you 🤷‍♀️

@Tony @fcktheworld587 Tony is right, you have to give yourself a minimum amount of respect. But no one is "perfect the way you are." And I no longer believe one has to love oneself. God does that for me. I have a human soul and I owe it to the world to do my best. So I respect myself not because I'm vain, but because of my potential, and my responsibility to others. I'm indebted to God or whatever force of nature that created me.

@fcktheworld587 much of what I’ve accomplished in my life is because I have operated as you describe. Believe it or not, it will eventually pay off. As long as the worldview keeps you working, it will work out!
