@clive great essay -- the exact same mirror has given me the exact same sensation of corporeal extension

@clive The old-fashioned dorky version of this is a dental mirror tape to the helmet at just the right angle and handle distance to work. I did that for a few years when bike commuting.

@clive Ah, has this been analysed in relation to crashes?Mirror in proximity to an eye is not exactly what sounds great.OTOH, having better all around sight, should lower the probability of a crash.

@yacc143 Yeah it increases danger in the event of a crash! I haven’t seen data on it but I can’t imagine it’d be *good* to have a loose sharp pointy thing near your eyes when you’re hitting the ground But I think your second point is correct too — I would hypothesize that it reduces the risk of an accident sufficiently that it compensate for the increased risk?

@brbcoding I've thought of trying those head mounted units! One guy I rode with for a while was older and pretty deaf, so he had a rear-mounted radar that alerted the approach of most vehiclesWhich Garmin head unit do you have?

@brbcoding I can’t speak to the 840 solar, but the battery life on the 1040 was pretty spectacularIf I rode during a day with good sunshine, five or six hours of operation would only drain it by 10% or 15%, if kept the backlighting at 0%and practice, I had no trouble reading the screen at 0% backlighting, and I have pretty terrible vision Basically, I could use it for maybe 40 hours without recharging it
