As opposed to “3am in the *afternoon*”?

@revk "It's 12 am in the afternoon."It really annoys me when people put am/pm after 12. It's meaningless, ffs.

@mansr @revk A: I suggest that we number the days of the month so the second day is numbered 1, third 2, and so on.B: So the first day of the month would be zero?A: No, the first day would be numbered for the number of days in the previous month, 28, 29, 30 or 31.B: That's bonkers.A: But it's what AM/PM times do for *half* days.

@mansr @revk I'd argue that "pm" does make some sense - every minute after 12:00 (midday) is in the afternoon even if 12:00 itself isn't really. But a 24-hour time makes much more sense.

@grumpygrimnir @revk 12:01 am/pm is correct. 12:00 has to be qualified with noon or midnight.

@mansr @revk Madness. Especially considering that the 'm' is short for 'meridian', where we'd expect the sun to be highest at 12:00 hours but with DST it happens at 13:00 instead :-)

@RupertReynolds @mansr unless you are in wales and it is a few minutes later :-)

@revk @mansr Fair comment :-) I've never lived further than 2.535°W, which isn't quite enough to notice these things.

@RupertReynolds @revk Even in Greenwich, the sun isn't usually at its highest at 12:00 GMT. Axis inclination and all that.

@mansr @revk That one's beyond my mental model. To me, inclination (of the Earth's axis) only affects how high the sun appears.

@RupertReynolds @revk The movement of the earth around the sun over the course of a day introduces a slight asymmetry. Thinking about it makes my head hurt, though.
