TBH the most fucked up thing about fighting CP spread is that you can't create automated tools for this on your own, because doing so is also illegal.

Which also makes me think about how exactly Google et al. did train their NN filters to spot CP...Does Google have a government-issued license to store CP?

@newt I've been wondering if we need to fiddle with those laws a bit. It seems bizarre the way we handle turning that stuff in to the fuzz. :comfypolice:

@icedquinn those laws are written in such a way that makes you think whether the legislators even bothered thinking about fighting to source of the problem instead of its consequences. Also, CP is incredibly easy to plant on someone's device. It's even easier than with drugs. Which creates a huge space for the abuse of power right here. Like, I wouldn't even be surprised if a not insignificant percent of people tried and prosecuted for the possession of CSAM didn't really have any and that stuff was planted by the police to make numbers.Meanwhile, Epstein island client list still isn't published.

@newt Some German journalists had an interesting approach. They joined dedicated darknet forums sharing this, realized that the content itself is in the clearnet on random file hosters, and in the forum only the links to the locations are shared. So they took a script and automatically reported those links to the file hosters, that removed them. All was done without ever looking at it, they just reported the links.
