@tomjennings this report is that its all information we were quite aware of since '17 and have actually dealt quite well with it by building out more moderation tooling around the fediverse. most of the tools today started from dealing with these exact servers but the problem isnt really solvable in the way that they would wish. even if all the servers in the anglosphere implemented centralized detection like they proposed the instances in japan would just ignore them

@liaizon Right. And to the extent that it's a problem I assume most of it is newness and scaling. Part of me is cynically concerned that corporate sites will attempt to weaken any competition via any means possible, such as this. Delegitimizing the fediverse is inexpensive.

People exist in the world that you don't agree with. It's no different on social media - any kind of social media. I block no sites, yet never see any bad stuff. I do this by using an old fashioned concept called "permissions" which prevents total strangers putting posts in my timeline (inbox) in the first place. The "federated timeline" aka "public stream" doesn't exist here, because it's an un-moderated cesspool. So from my point of view it's a non-problem. If the police want to find and arrest these people - that's their business. My business is creating safe online spaces.

@mike Oh sure. None of this online stuff is new to me.I've blocked exceedingly few people, here or anywhere, at any time in the last 40 years. Two in the fediverse, reported (nasty homophobe trolls), a handful during the Russian-troll era of Facebook in the chump years. I'm currently lurking on lemmy.world (or was; it's getting too bro-ey for me) and the number of people claiming the need to block instances and people surprises me; like you, it's just not my experience. Sure there' people I probably wouldn't like IRL, but even most of them contribute something, and it's easy enough to simply be somewhere else...I've luckily never been the target of a concerted harassment campaign; many have. That might change my approach. But I've been adjacent enough to take seriously anyone's fears and worries in that regard.
