Google is once again going to take a shot at trying to delete old stuff, coming up with an arbitrary inactivity period, and while the cost savings will be enormous for them, a lot of things are going to go poof, for sure.

The most pressing will be Youtube Videos - accounts that are inactive for 2 years may see their videos deleted. They've been wavering on this for sure, as people have figured it out. Tech companies still have the DNA of boys who assume they will live forever, so Dead People Stuff is not how they easily process understanding of it. Facebook added "In Memoriam". Likely Google should really do this soon as well.

@textfiles anything with YouTube videos is excluded fortunately. We've already lost more than enough due to deleted accounts and dumb dmcas and such

@textfiles "the Gmail address for the deleted account cannot be used again when creating a new Google Account."...then what's the point? Running out of accounts is the only thing I can think of that would possibly justify this change. Space concerns maybe as well, but for a company as big as Google I don't think it's that big of a deal yet (although I could be wrong, I don't run any major servers)

@textfiles I believe it says in the email that if you have a creator account or have videos uploaded, this policy does not apply to you.

@textfiles From reading the statement, it seems that the YouTube videos would only be deleted if the user is inactive on their entire Google account for 2 years, not just YouTube. I'm sure they have the authority to just delete stuff arbitrarily with no announcement and no user recourse, so the fact that they're saying anything at all is positive. But you're right: in any case Dead People Stuff is an issue

@textfiles FB deleted several of my "research" notes, which I now cannot recreate (notes deleted along with everybody else's that one time, with no warning, other than apparently one on your TL, once) Evil

@textfiles Here's one I'm concerned about. Back in the day, these were innovative and amazing demonstrations of floating point error abuse in Minecraft https://www.youtube.com/@test137E29/videos

@textfiles What stinks about this situation is that most people won't know they've been hurt until a few years from now when they go to find a thing, or several things, and it's just .... GONE.Those of us who were around for the internet's early days have this happen to us more often than most, I suspect.
