You may have mistaken these two dots for an umlaut, but they have a different job in English. It's all about vowels! https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/articles/what-is-a-diaeresis-and-why-do-we-use-it/

@grammargirl It took me a long time to realize that a diaeresis was not the same as an umlaut. I didn't learn the word diaeresis until many years after learning German at high school, so "umlaut" was the name I used for both diacritic marks. Also, diaeresis is hard to spell! I don't think I've ever had to type it out before.(BTW, there's a typo in the article, where it says "And that make sense.")

@grammargirl Same applies in German, when two dots appear over a "y." The intention there was to signal that the letter was indeed a "y" and not a "g" because some writers' script did not clearly differentiate between the two letters.

I suspect the term precedes the song, but if the reference isn't to the song or movie anyway, capital Valley for a specific, known geographic designation and lowercase girl. But capitalize Grammar Girl as there is only one GG.

@grammargirl That's the word I was looking for! Lost in the brain attic.
