this is why you don't allow electricians to run DATA

@mia That's still not to spec. Those twisted pairs are supposed to be shielded to prevent crosstalk

@Rasp@raru.re they’re twisted pairs already so they don’t need individual shielding to avoid crosstalk.they MIGHT need shielding from outside influences tho, but that also needs to be terminated at that connection point to avoid ground loops through the shielding (there’s going to be considerable potential difference depending on where that wiring goes)

@mia still its just not worth it to splice a data cable like this.

@Rasp@raru.re yeah it absolutely isn’t, lol, whoever did that shit definitely shouldn’t be an electrician either

@Rasp In my parents house I connected the ends of the old ISDN lines (should be CAT3) to a cut of end of a patch cable with an RJ45 plug. It works fine with 100Mbit ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

@Rasp @mia UTP stands for unshielded twisted pair. But that's not the joke.I thought it was funny anyway.

@Rasp I found a strip of choc-bloc joining cat 5 in a ceiling void once.

@Rasp Maybe it's an electrician playing at telecommunications cabling. But what if it's a telecommunications cabler playing at electrician? Tag-out the whole disaster.

@Rasp @mia Nope. What they are meant to do is to maintain a fixed separation and to use connectors which allow performance into the 100s of MHz. That connector -- with the wire coming to an abrupt halt -- is fine for low frequencies like 60Hz but is basically a wall for frequencies of 200Hz.
