@FortyTwo Thomas Dewey was a monster. The least of his creations is that system

@CrimeaRiver Oh, yeah, for sureI was just reminiscing over how fucked up memorizing a series of numbers so you could narrow your search to a subtopic of books located in a warehouse full of shelves was back in the old days.

@FortyTwo @CrimeaRiver I remember when my school switched over from the card catalog to a computerized system. You can look up that book on the new shiny iMacs!

@FortyTwo Because Alphabetical by author, last name, first name made no sense whatsoever…

@Bunnyslope oh, it's so precious...You see, books were alphabetized "in sections", and these sections were arbitrarily sorted by a numbering system. For example:500 Natural sciences and mathematics510 Mathematics516 Geometry516.3 Analytic geometries516.37 Metric differential geometries516.375 Finsler geometrySo, if you wanted to find a book on geometry, you wouldn't go to the "G" shelf, there was no "G" shelf. You'd go to the 516 shelves and then search the books alphabetically.

@Bunnyslope you probably knew this, but for the younger kids reading this thread, maybe it'll clarify it a bit for them.

@AdamAtSea @CrimeaRiver they were still rocking the card catalog when I was in college. I wonder what year they made the switch?

@FortyTwo the three most recent libraries I’ve been to in Michigan, Florida, and California are still Dewey. What is replacing it? BISAC?

@Jeff24 it's probably all still Dewey but it's kinda hidden now since most libraries have gotten rid of their card catalog for a computer search system.Sadly, I almost never go to a library anymore now. I got my kids library cards when they were old enough and, so far, they haven't had to go to the library to research like I did when I was in school. The internet has changed everything.

@FortyTwo Yes. Yes I did.My favorite times with the old system were when I had to look something up in the “Card Catalog” and someone either took the card (because it was easier than writing it down) or some wiseass figured out how to pull the rod and then rearranged the whole drawer of cards!🤬🤬🤬
